Café Review: Tea Pod

“There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be diminished by a nice cup of tea,” says the promise inscribed on the wall as you walk through the door of this cheerful, inviting little café on the cobbled Shad Thames. But don’t be fooled – the enticing laid-back look does not live up to expectations.
My friend and I stepped in-and-out of the shop four times within 15 minutes, unsuccessfully searching for a seat with a casual “we haven’t just stepped in here four times and looked at all the same people” air about us each time we ‘rediscovered’ it. We had our heart set on this cute colourful café – it was raining, we wanted somewhere cosy and everywhere else had a generic or terribly expensive look to it- but no-one was budging.
Fifth time lucky and we had a seat on the edge of a sturdy wooden table. Time for tea.
The menu is promising. A selection of over 20 teas split into five different categories: black; green; white; fruit; rare; and signature drinks, with some suitable tea-accompanying snacks: sandwiches, soup, scones, teacakes, pancakes and a beautiful array of cakes. The lemon and rosemary option was particularly appealing, but we went for the carrot cake, which was admittedly excellent – the perfect blend of crunchy and moist.
For the tea, we opted for a pot of Earl Grey for two, which arrived in a cute modern looking little tea pot and certainly eased our ‘ordeal’ of finding a seat. There’s even a timer on the wall to help you achieve the perfect brew.
But although the ingredients for this café were there, the mix didn’t add up. It was a bit like putting a cake under the grill. It has the potential to be perfect, but it is never going to work, and a quirky café in this location has the same problem. It’s the only of its kind in an area of Starbucks, All Bar Ones and poncy blandness.
As such Teapod’s clientele are the same but against a backdrop that doesn’t fit – they’ve wandered in and don’t really feel at home. It feels forced and when all you want is a relaxing cuppa, this café can’t deliver. Not least because of the service: tea spilled, no smiles and an air of ‘I really can’t be bothered’. You probably shouldn’t either. Teapod is a disappointment, and you don’t know it until you’re sitting down. A take-away is your best bet.
Good for: A take-away tea and cake by the river
