hey, i went to see this recently, it really is great. I’d actually never seen the play performed before and it really didnt let me down at all. Ian McKellen was especially good, almost to the point of outshining Patrick Stewart who was also pretty damn good! I also have to give a mention to the set design, I’d heard a lot of purists slag it off but I thought it was really interesting…gradually melding the design of the theatre with the onstage set (I’m sure there’s a word for that somewhere), I thought it went really well with the overall tone of the play. Speaking of which, don’t be deterred by the reputation of this play! Approach it with an open mind and its actually really funny and enjoyable, not to mention the endless discussion that follows on the meaning or non-meaning of all the different ideas thrown about, which really isnt as heavy as it sounds, those weighty issues of literature are handled so lightheartedly that it makes debate genuinely enjoyable on those crazy meta-issues (its turtles all the way down!). Anyway, i recommend it, 8 1/2 thumbs up, out of something.
