Album review: I Am A Man With A St Tropez Tan

Artist: I Am A Man With A St Tropez Tan
Album: I Am A Man With A St Tropez Tan
Rating: 8/10

If the artist behind this album actually had a St Tropez tan, he would be the perfect man. His skin would be the golden colour of a Greek God – an outward expression of his inner abilities as a gold medal musician in the Originality Olympics.

The album has the echoing, eerily atmospheric buffer of an amniotic aura cleanser. But don’t be fooled by the hippy language, you only earn that level of relaxation afforded by a nightclub after traversing, what feels like, an audio adventure.

You will be met with abrasive syncopated dub-beats from the start while being fired at by beams of electronic laser trance – a seemingly difficult combination that blends, apparently, effortlessly. Being met by the odd person along the way with short sparks of vocals – like those used by Burial – afford the listener a glimmer of normality, in an otherwise complex digital jungle of audaciously blended layers.

Don’t be misled into thinking this exploit is an arduous one. Far from it – you’ll be carried through, on what feels like, a slide of pure silk rubbing against your naked botty. If you’re in the mood for a bit more rough and tumble and start to get into the opening track, I Like Your Mouth, you may find yourself a little let down when the heavy sounds do the same and are tuned out in the heart of the album.

If you’re on a tanning bed, or indeed in the real sun, you won’t be lost for places to explore in the deep recesses of your own mind while absorbing this adventurous album.
