A tale of two cities
By Kate Livesey • May 9th, 2008 • Category: NewsBoris Johnson, London’s new Conservative mayor, met with his counterpart, Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York City today to discuss the challenges of running a major metropolis.
Mr Johnson welcomed Mr Bloomberg to City Hall this morning. The two posed briefly on the balcony, overlooking London for the contrived “photo op” before running inside to exchange gifts.
Mr Money-Bags Bloomberg presented Mr Johnson with a Tiffany box containing a prohibitively expensive and almost utterly useless crystal “Big Apple” paperweight. Not to be outdone, the ever tasteful Mr Johnson gave Mr Bloomberg an Underground map tee-shirt, just like the ones almost always located next to the Union Jack bra and thong set in tourist shops along Oxford Street. The shirt was presented in the same cheap plastic wrap it came in-talk about class.
The two blowhards, erm, mayors are expected to discuss how London can learn from “zero tolerance” strategies adopted in New York for tackling law and order issues.
The pair are also expected to touch upon the issues of public transport, education and skills, the environment and working in partnership.
