Londoners loved Carol Lesley Barnes.

The ITN newsreader passed away on Saturday 7 March at the age of 63 after suffering a stroke a week earlier.

Born in Norwich on 13 September 1944, she moved and went to school in Tulse Hill, London. She left school at 16 to train as a fashion buyer at Harrods, before deciding to study French at Sheffield University and going on to train as a teacher.

Barnes’s journalism career launched in 1973 when she started work at LBC, a new London radio station. Three years later she joined ITN as a reporter and covered hard-hitting news such as the 1981 Brixton riots - while she was pregnant. She also anchored ITV’s extensive 16-hour coverage of Princess Diana’s death.

She was with Denis MacShane, a former Labour Foreign Office minister from 1975 to 1982, and they had a daughter, Clare.

However, in March 2004 Clare died aged 24 when her parachute failed to open while on holiday in Melbourne.

After her relationship ended with MacShane, Barnes married Nigel Thomson, a cameraman, but they divorced in 1998. They had one son together, James, now 24.

James said: “My mum was a beautiful, kind and delicate person - a person loved by many and whom I am desperately proud to call my mother.

“She did everything in her power to love, care and provide for me, my sister and all those close to her. I am eternally indebted to her for what she has given us. I will always love her and she will forever be in my heart.”

Sir Trevor McDonald, a former colleague, said: “She was one of these people who was never overpowered by any sense of being a television star.”

She passed away at Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, after suffering a stroke last Saturday, the day before she was due to go on holiday in South Africa.

He was a notorious porn baron but there was more to Paul Raymond's life than money and women.

He was a notorious porn baron but as Victoria Gallagher found out, there was more to Paul Raymond’s life than money and women.

King of the Soho strip club, porn publisher Paul Raymond died of respiratory failure on Monday 3 March at the age of 82. The Catholic striptease baron owned one of the country’s first strip clubs and is thought to have been worth over £650 million.

Born Geoffrey Anthony Quinn on 15 November 1925, Raymond was brought up by his mother in Liverpool. He left school aged 15 aiming to get into show business. He toured halls giving a variety of performances such as mind reading and being a clairvoyant. It wasn’t enough, so to pull in the punters he decided to introduce two strippers into his routine. It worked and the show became a big hit.

In post war Britain it was illegal to perform naked on stage. But Raymond found a loophole in the law and found it actually said that it was illegal for naked people to move on stage. The women stood still and Raymond started to get rich.

In 1958 Raymond opened his iconic strip club, Raymond Revue Bar in Soho. He managed to dodge censorship laws by operating as a club rather than a theatre, and after a couple of years had 50,000 members. The strip club was one of London’s first, and huge signs outside labelled it the World Centre of Erotic Entertainment. Despite criticism from the church and others, Raymond’s money continued piling up thanks to his judicious forays into the property market.

He decided to break into publishing and launched a range of erotic magazines including Men Only, Mayfair and Razzle. His life wasn’t without his own women and in 1951, Raymond married his first wife Jean Bradley, a former dancer. However his womanising put a strain on their marriage and they divorced in 1974 after Raymond had an affair with Fiona Richmond, an actress.

Raymond had a son and a daughter from his marriage, as well as a son from a previous relationship but it was his favourite daughter Debbie who took over her father’s publishing business while he focused on property. Sadly, Debbie died in 1992 from a drug overdose. He was badly affected by her death and according to his ex-wife Jean “she was the only thing that mattered to him more than his wealth.”

After selling his strip club in 1998, he lived out his days in a penthouse next to the Ritz in London.

Lampposts in Brick Lane were padded up in an attempt to reduce “walk and text” injuries on 4 March. Victoria Gallagher investigates.

The “safe text” street is the first in the country and if successful will be repeated in other areas of the capital.

Tony Armstrong, chief executive of Living Streets, a charity for improving roads for pedestrians, said: “Britain’s streets are becoming increasingly like obstacle courses. We were surprised by the scale of accidents but know from our members that cluttered streets continue to cause daily danger.”

A survey carried out by 118.com found that 44 per cent of mobile users supported the idea of the padding.

Kirsty Nutkins, a student from London and victim of a texting injury, welcomes the idea: “I was texting and I walked into a bike rack and got my heel tangled in one of the spokes. It was really embarrassing and I think that padding is definitely a good idea, very thoughtful.”
