Booze ban hitting an Off-licence near you

Mayor Boris Johnson is encouraging off-licence owners not to sell alcohol to under 21’s in order to stem the tide of booze related violence in the capital.

Although young adults are legally allowed to buy drink at the age of 18, Boris Johnson thinks a U.S. styled 21 and over system would combat the “huge” problem of binge drinking in the capital.

The pilot scheme is to be launched in Croydon, south London and will be extended to the rest of the city if successful.

A spokesperson for the charity Alcohol Concern however was skeptical of the scheme saying it was unfeasible, unless all drinks outlets were prepared to go along with the ban.

Londoners believe that the ban is a brilliant tactic on the behalf of the mayor to avoid addressing the underlying reasons for violence in underprivileged neighbourhoods: such as unemployment, poverty, and a lack of public recreational resources.
